Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
